Newsletter from Fundu lagoon

The General Manager has now been at Fundu Lagoon for one year and a lot has happened during that time so she'd like to update you on the exciting developments
Welcome to FUNDU FABLES
Greetings from Fundu Lagoon! The elections in Zanzibar have passed peacefully and here in Pemba , we are now looking forward to Christmas and the New Year. The weather is clearing and getting warm, (although the short November rains have been refreshing and infrequent), the diving visibility is great, (divers had 4 bottlenose dolphins swimming with them yesterday!) and we have our usual crowd of fun-loving guests.
The full moon parties on our yoga platform are new - we have invented a new cocktail and we all climb up the hill to the platform at 1730 for a well–deserved “Moon upper”. As the sun sets, the full moon rises and bathes the whole lagoon in silver light. The yoga platform is in a fabulous position with a 360-degree view of forest, beach and sea, and with no artificial lights in view except for the twinkling of the Fundu jetty below, it's remote and unique! We'll be having another full moon bash next week.
And, incidentally, at the time of writing this, there were still a couple of vacancies left for the Christmas New Year period - if you're quick!

Our school now has a roof! We are very excited that over 130 children have registered, their uniforms are being sewn in the village, and in January we open!
The school is a direct result of guests' donations in the last year. Everyone who has stayed at Fundu should feel they are contributing to the future prospects of these precocious, bright little kids that they meet when they go walking in the village.
A few first year hopefuls line up outside the new classroom.
Many guests who spot our website page showing our community work before travelling here have been kind enough to find space in their limited luggage allowance to squeeze in a few pencils and books. With the latest arrival of several inflatable globes (great idea!) and some encyclopaedias, we will soon have one of the best supplied schools in Zanzibar. Please keep the goodies coming.
The ladies of the village are doing very well in their co-operative - we have an export industry! One of the managers in a lodge in the Selous Game Reserve was so impressed by our raffia-style water bottle covers that they ordered 100 from us. The ladies have also been busy at low tide collecting clams for our kitchen, re-covering our champagne coolers, and have so far produced 5 kgs of okra and 9.5 kgs of aubergines from our kitchen garden, plus two rather small tomatoes. Well hey, it's a start…

The fishing on the catamaran is doing nicely. Our new skipper Pete has found out where the big fish hang out and guests have caught 2 king fish and 3 tuna in the last week - they love arriving back triumphant and taking them to chef to say how they would like it to be cooked. With every catch we bring out huge trays of sashimi and cerviche for everyone to enjoy at the jetty bar before dinner... that's as fresh as you can get it!
Our new Superior suites are selling very well and guests are enjoying the extra privacy and space that these rooms offer – the plunge pools alone could accommodate six people! We’ve started holding a manager’s cocktail party in a superior suite every week, if there is one not occupied for a night, as they are such a good party venue. Chef makes his yummy range of canapés and we set up some music and invite the whole hotel. Sometimes, like tonight, the guests staying in the room actually ask us to invite everyone round so they can entertain them ‘at home’ - with no effort, and in full style!
That’s it for now! Sent with best wishes from Fundu, till next time,
Fundu Fables will be published on our website on a quarterly basis

Fundu Lagoon resort hotel, Pemba, Zanzibar

Fundu lagoon is off the coast of east africa, situated on Pemba Island, the sister island to Zanzibar lying across the Pemba Channel to the north. The hotel is situated on a remote and beautiful beach on the south western side of the island and is only accessible by boat.

There are sixteen tented bungalows, offering spacious accommodation inside and out, set under makuti (thatch) roofs on wooden decks and each with a view over the ocean. The rooms are equipped with large double or twin beds, mosquito nets, ceiling and standing fans, and indoor and outdoor seating areas. Each has an ensuite bathroom with fresh hot water shower, toilet and basin. The rooms are connected to the main buildings by sand walkways. Some rooms are situated along the beachfront with the remaining on an elevated position overlooking the ocean.

Four of our sixteen accommodations are suites with their own private chill out decks and plunge pools. Two of which are superior beach suites with extensive space to relax and a large plunge pool.

We aim to provide the perfect environment for an idyllic vacation, an untroubled haven of tropical sunshine.

The resort offers two bars, a games and television room, an excellent restaurant serving local and international cuisine and a massage and treatment room.

Listed as one of the top diving locations in the world, we also cater for the more energetic holiday-maker with a fully-equipped PADI Resort Diving Centre and a range of watersports including snorkeling and kayaking.

Fashion designer Ellis Flyte and property developers Alex and Marcus Lewis are the directors of Fundu Lagoon.
